Hospital Accreditation

In October 2012, Kingston General Hospital (KGH) was awarded ‘Accreditation with Exemplary Standing’ from Accreditation Canada. Accreditation is a voluntary process that allows health-care providers to assess every aspect of health care and service against national standards of excellence.

In the surveyors’ final report, Accreditation Canada determined that KGH met 2,223 out of 2,248 standards and criteria for an overall score of 98.9 per cent. That was an increase of nearly five per cent since KGH’s last accreditation in 2009.

Accreditation Canada provides four different award levels; no accreditation, accreditation, accreditation with commendation and its highest recognition – accreditation with exemplary standing. Exemplary standing denotes that an organization has attained the highest level of performance and quality by achieving the majority of required elements in the accreditation program.

Surveyors spent four days on-site at KGH during September 2012, reviewing documentation and performance data, observing care processes, interviewing patients, families, staff, physicians, and community partners to provide “a 360 degree look” at the hospital.

“This is a real measure of how far we’ve come,” said KGH President and CEO Leslee Thompson. “To receive the highest award that Accreditation Canada provides is recognition that our dedicated teamwork and commitment to providing Outstanding Care, Always is paying off.”
