Privacy and Access to Information 

Kingston General Hospital is committed to protecting the privacy, confidentiality and security of information entrusted to us by our patients, staff and other stakeholders. We adhere to standards that build and support a culture of privacy through education and guidance.
 
We provide assistance to hospital staff, patients and their families to protect both personal health information and hospital operational information. We ensure that the hospital is compliant with privacy legislation. The Privacy Office is shared between KGH and Hotel Dieu Hospital. It consists of a Privacy Officer/ Freedom of Information Coordinator who specialists in privacy and records management.
 
Personal health information (PHI)
The hospital is committed to protecting the privacy, confidentiality and security of all personal health information in compliance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) enacted in 2004.
 
General records and personal information (GR&PI)
Effective January 1, 2012, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) will apply to all Ontario hospitals. FIPPA provides individuals with the right to access their (non-health) personal information held by the hospital as well as the right to access information retained by the hospital about its management and operation. This right of access promotes accountability but recognizes specific exemptions and exclusions that are necessary to preserve the privacy of personal information.
 
The Information Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPCO) is the oversight body for PHIPA and FIPPA.
