Jennifer Tang, Resident, Emergency Medicine

See one, do one, teach one

learning1.JPGJen Tang now understands why this expression is so commonly used in the field of medicine. Since her arrival in Kingston in July 2009, the resident doctor in the Emergency Medicine program has worn several hats. She is a member of the KGH staff, a learner through Queen’s University and a teacher to junior medical students.

“My experiences at KGH have been very positive,” explains Tang. “Both staff and patients are supportive and they welcome learners in the workplace.”

Jen’s studies took her to Hamilton where she received a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from McMaster University and then it was off to the University of Western Ontario in London where she earned her medical degree. She chose KGH and Queen’s University because she could see herself thriving, learning a lot and being very happy at work.

“The resident program provides learners with ample formal educational opportunities through weekly rounds with senior residents and staff, core teaching sessions and lab simulation sessions. On the job, we are supervised by staff doctors who offer guidance regarding patient management. The work environment is very collegial and this makes for a great place to learn.”

Like many residents, Jen works long hours. As an active member of Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO), she rallies for initiatives that ensure residents’ well-being.

The PAIRO initiative called Home After Handover allows residents, after being on call for 24 hours, to be relieved of their duties once there has been adequate handover of patient care responsibilities. “The motive behind the program is not for residents to work less but to improve patient safety and to ensure optimal resident education,” says Tang.

Tang says senior staff have shown tremendous support for this initiative by respecting the work-hour limitations of residents. Residents can also take advantage of hospital-wide wellness initiatives including discounted fitness memberships, ergonomic services and meditation sessions.
