KGH adopts strategy to become top performer in quality, safety and research

Southeastern Ontario’s leading centre for complex-acute and specialty care today announced the details of a five-year strategy that will position Kingston General Hospital as a top performer in patient care, safety and research.

More than 2,000 internal and external stakeholders participated in the consultation process that informed KGH’s new strategy. Launched at the hospital’s annual general meeting, KGH 2015: Strategy for achieving Outstanding Care, Always, presents a compelling vision of KGH as a patient-centred, dynamic research hospital and leader in interprofessional practice and education.

“We listened carefully to more than 2,000 people who participated in a consultation to shape the future of KGH,” said KGH Board Chair Bill Richard. “They asked us to build on our strengths to take quality and safety to new levels. We will ensure that our aim of Outstanding Care, Always becomes the reality at KGH for every patient, every day, through advances in clinical care, knowledge and leadership.”

The strategy sets out four major strategic directions that together will define a new future for one of Canada’s oldest hospitals. Over the next five years, KGH will transform the experience of its patients and their families through a relentless focus on quality, safety and service. It will become a leader in the development of new models of team-based interprofessional care and education. It will develop a new research institute that focuses on investigations that improve patient care and outcomes. Lastly, it will increase its focus on complex-acute and specialty care.

KGH’s financial reports indicate the hospital is $7 million ahead of where it expected to be at year end and is meeting all deficit reduction targets specified in its Performance Improvement Plan.

“I am confident in our ability to deliver on our strategy, first because of the depth and breadth of our consultation,” said President and CEO Leslee Thompson. “And second because we are already turning a corner with our performance. We are reducing our deficit and heading toward a balanced budget by 2012. We are completing our hospital’s largest redevelopment project ever – on time and on budget – while continuing to care for patients. And, based on our improving performance, we are earning increased investment from the South East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) and the provincial government. This gives us the platform we need to build a new future for KGH together with our partners in the region’s health-care system.”
