New King Street entrance opens to traffic

A new entrance along King Street West has been created as part of KGH's overall redevelopment project. The entrance is located on Burr level 0. This new entrance is the most direct route for patients and families going to:
• the cancer centre
• the renal (dialysis) unit

The existing entrance located underneath the emergency department ramp will be closed effective August 15. This area is being repurposed as part of the cancer centre redevelopment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What entrance do I use from now on?
The new King Street entrance will open Monday, August 8. The existing entrance (located under the emergency department ramp) will remain open until Monday, August 15 to allow patients and families to get oriented to the new entrance. After August 15, only the new King Street entrance will remain open. Volunteers will be located at both entrances during the transition to help patients and families find their way.

Who should use the new entrance?
This is the most direct route for patients and families going to:
• the cancer centre on Burr 0 and 1 (chemotherapy, radiation therapy and outpatient clinic appointments)
• cancer centre administration on Burr 2
• the renal (dialysis) unit on Burr 3

What's the best entrance for getting to the mental health unit on Burr 4?
Patients and families accessing the mental health unit on Burr 4 should continue to use the George Street South entrance. This has the closest access to the elevator that goes to Burr 4 and is the most direct route to the unit.  The George Street South entrance will remain open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

How do I access the new entrance from King Street?
The new King Street entrance should only be used by drivers travelling west bound on King Street. There will be no left-hand turns permitted on King Street for safety reasons. If you are travelling east, you may change direction by turning into the Murney Tower parking lot at King and Barrie streets.

Which elevator do I use?
Patients and families going to the renal unit on Burr 3 should use the new double bank of elevators located to the right, inside the new King Street entrance. Patients and families accessing the cancer centre chemotherapy or outpatient clinics on Burr 1 should proceed through the new lobby area to the existing elevator. Directional signs and volunteers will help you find your way. Later this fall, patients and families going to Burr 1 will be able to use the new double bank of elevators when construction in that area is complete.

Where do I park?
Cancer and renal patients will continue to receive priority parking, on a first come, first-served basis, underneath the George Street North (GIDRU) parking lot (see map on reverse). Patients parked here should continue to use this entrance. If the GIDRU parking lot is full, patients may use the Stuart Street underground parking lot or street parking at posted fees. Mental health patients may also make use of the Stuart Street underground parking lot or street parking at posted fees.

Where can I be dropped off and picked up?
Patients may be dropped at either the George Street South entrance or the new entrance off of King Street West. This entrance is intended for drop off and pick up only to allow for smooth traffic flow. The new King Street entrance should only be used by drivers travelling west bound on King Street. Drivers are also asked to turn right, not left, when exiting for safety reasons. Please be advised that the King Street entrance has a clearance height of 9 feet.

Where will the Access Bus drop me off and pick me up?
The Access Bus will continue to drop patients at the Kidd-Davies main entrance located off of Stuart Street and the George Street South entrance.

What are the hours for the new entrance?
The new King Street entrance will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. After 9 p.m., patients and families may use the lift phone located inside the doors to gain access via our security office.

Where will the coffee kiosk be located?
The temporary coffee kiosk is currently located inside the cancer centre's existing entrance (located under the emergency department ramp) will remain open until August 12. A new kiosk featuring hot beverages, soups, sandwiches and snacks will open inside the new King Street entrance to the right of the new double bank of elevators in about 4 to 6 weeks. In the interim, patients and families can visit the Auxiliary Tuck Shop on Connell 1, the Auxiliary Café in the Kidd-Davies main lobby or the Atrium cafeteria on Kidd 0.
