Cancer

The Cancer program at KGH coordinates the provision of cancer services throughout Southeastern Ontario from Brighton in the west to Brockville and Perth/Smiths Falls in the east.

We provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care that includes radiation, chemotherapy, systemic and surgical treatment, palliative medicine and supportive care on an inpatient and ambulatory basis.

Ambulatory (or outpatient) cancer care takes place primarily in the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario which is part of KGH.  Inpatient cancer care is provided in a number of areas within KGH namely 14 dedicated oncology beds which includes our stem cell transplant program and through the surgical and medicine programs.

We welcome, inform and involve our patients and their families in the decisions surrounding their treatment and care.

Comprehensive cancer care is a vital aspect of our program so that we provide pain and symptom management, psychosocial and nutritional counseling, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, spiritual care, as well as palliative and end-of-life care.

Cancer prevention is another priority for KGH. Through the Southeast Regional Cancer Program, we participate in the Ontario Breast Screening Program and in colorectal screening programs. Through the Familial Oncology Program (FOP), a division of Medical Genetics, we offer genetic counselling and testing for individuals and families at risk for inherited forms of cancer, primarily breast, ovarian and colorectal. Cancer research is a critical component of our program. At KGH, researchers, faculty and students collaborate on a range of clinical, health services, physics and experimental research that benefits our patients, including the investigation of new drugs and new technology.

The cancer program is involved in the training of a wide spectrum of health care professionals: doctors, nurses, radiation therapists and physicists, all essential to the care of our patients

The Cancer Centre is currently undergoing a large redevelopment. We are modernizing our facilities and adding an additional 37,000 square feet to improve the patient and caregiver experience. We are also adding two new radiation treatment bunkers, doubling the chemotherapy space from 15 treatment spaces to 39, creating dedicated space for children with cancer and a separate area for our palliative medicine and supportive care program. This phase of the project is scheduled to be finished in 2011.
