Nephrology + dialysis
Nephrology services provides both attending and consultative support for patients with actual or predicted kidney disorders.
Patients we treat typically have conditions including:
• Acute or chronic abnormal glomerular filtration rate
• Proteinuria
• Hematuria
• Hypertension
• Electrolyte disturbances
• Anemia
• Bone diseases
The multi-professional renal care team provides direct care to patients who are likely to require renal replacement therapy.
KGH plays a key role in the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Priority Program through both local and outreach clinics. These include the in-hospital nephrology ward, chronic kidney disease outpatient program, renal transplant program, peritoneal dialysis program, and hemodialysis program.
We provide dialysis throughout southeastern Ontario at a number of locations, including in KGH and in patients’ homes and at other healthcare facilities in the region.
Ambulatory and inpatient care are provided at KGH and Weeneebayko General Hospital.
In support of the clinical services offered, the Nephrology Division of Queen’s University Department of Medicine provides a comprehensive chronic kidney disease education program and is responsible for the education of all renal patients under its care in order to allow patients to give true informed consent.
