Become a volunteer
Volunteers who are committed to providing compassionate care to our community are an integral part of the Kingston General Hospital team.
There are many opportunities for adult community members as well as post secondary and high school students. We ask for a minimum commitment of one shift per week for a minimum of six months or an agreed upon project or event-based contract.
For students whose “home base” takes them out of Kingston for large blocks of time throughout the year (exams, semester breaks), we accept applications in August/September and March/April (check Post-Secondary page for deadlines).
The application process for all interested volunteers includes six steps:
Application Form: Print and complete a volunteer application form or pick up a form at the Volunteer Services office on Connell 1.
References: The application form includes a request for 2 references. Volunteers are required to submit reference forms with their application form in order to be contacted for an interview.
Interview: You will be contacted to sign up for an interview once your application and 2 references have been submitted.
Criminal Reference Check: Kingston General Hospital requires a criminal reference check with the vulnerable sector search for any staff, physician, volunteer and student learner who is 18 years and older. Click here for details on the process.
Health Screening: Prior to starting their program specific training, volunteers must submit the results of a negative 2-step Tuberculosis (TB) test and provide proof of immunization. See pages 3 & 4 on the above link to the application form for full details. The TB test can take up to 2 weeks and requires 4 visits (test administered and then return for reading for each of the 2 steps). The test can be administered through a family physician/RN, public health, Queen’s Student Health (for current students) or a free drop-in clinic. We encourage applicants to investigate no-cost options as we cannot reimburse for this expense.
Orientation: Attend a hospital orientation session
Once the application process is complete, volunteers receive training specific to the area where they will spend time. The length of training varies depending on the area. Every effort is made to place volunteers in the programs of their choice.
