Clinical
The Department of Otolaryngology
fulfills its clinical role by providing
comprehensive secondary clinical care to
the greater Kingston area, and tertiary
services to the populations of Kingston
and the Southeastern Ontario region. General
otolaryngology services are complemented
by specialized services in head and neck
oncology, paediatric otolaryngology, voice
medicine, facial plastic and reconstructive
surgery, and neuro-otology. Outreach clinics,
and consultative and surgical services are
delivered in Moose Factory. The Department
works, in conjunction with other services
to offer specialized multidisciplinary clinical
services, such as for sleep apnea, voice
disorders, peds facial anomalies and hearing
impairment. Specialized tertiary care services,
such as skull base surgery and specialized
head and neck reconstruction cases, are
referred to larger centers.
The majority of ambulatory, multidisciplinary
clinics and surgical outpatient services
are provided through clinics at Hotel
Dieu Hospital (HDH) with inpatient care,
and more intensive surgical services, being
offered primarily at Kingston General Hospital
(KGH). The Department collaborates with
the Department of Psychiatry to support
the Community Communication and Feeding
Program for developmentally disabled adults
in the Kingston area. The Department provides
24-hours 7 days per week on-call coverage
for emergency, inpatient, and primary care
physician consultations. In addition the
Department provides interpretation services
for diagnostic audiology, electroneurography,
and rhinomanometry services.
At KGH, Otolaryngology primarily relies
on services from radiation oncology, audiology
and speech language pathology, palliative
care, anesthesia and emergency services.
Research Research foci include: head and neck oncology
epidemiological and outcome research, speech
neuro-physiology and language development,
fetal wound healing, and domestic violence.
To fulfill its research role the Department
cross-appoints and funds a part-time research
scientist from the Department of Psychology.
While basic science research is encouraged
at all levels, the Department takes a role
in the application of research results by
assuming responsibility for effectively
incorporating clinical research results
into its practice. The Department also communicates
outcomes research to policy-makers.
