This program provides urgent and emergent care at two clinical settings in
Kingston. As the destination for all non-ambulatory patients, the emergency
department provides urgent and emergent care for seriously ill and injured
patients in southeastern Ontario while Hotel Dieu Hospital focuses on
ambulatory patients with less serious forms of injury or illness. In addition,
the department provides on-call toxicology expertise through the Ontario
regional Poison Information Centre available to practitioners across the
province. Specialized services and support are also provided to patients who
have been the victims of sexual assault or domestic violence.
Research
Emergency Medicine assumes an active role in many multidisciplinary, multicentre
projects that focus primarily on patient care, care protocols, and clinical
trials in the emergency department setting. Research activity is concentrated
in several areas including injury, acute cardiovascular presentations,
pre-hospital care, and acetaminophen-induced toxicity. The department maintains
involvement, at a national level, in research directed at the development of
decision-making rules for emergency room clinical practices. Furthermore, the
Department’s Injury Research Group takes on the responsibility of leading or
co-ordinating multiple national studies on injury prevention and injury
patterns.
